Spośród kilkudziesięciu płyt około-bluesowych które nabyłem w ciągu ostatnich miesięcy ta wywarła na mnie największe wrażenie. Nie doszukałem się wzmianek nigdzie na forum, więc rzucam garść informacji i swoich przemyśleń.
Cyril Lance - gitarzysta, kompozytor i aranżer pochodzący chyba z Hawajów a mieszkający w USA i grający bluesa i bluesrocka o zabarwieniu southernowym. Wpływy: między innymi ABB, Little Feat, Santana, Muddy Waters. Na wokalu (i klawiszach w 1 utworze) Johnny Neel (znany np. z ABB - Seven Turns i różnych projektów W. Haynesa). Na klawiszach Matt Jenson , na basie Chris Carroll, na bębnach Kelly Pace.
Dlaczego tak mnie to rusza? Chyba dlatego, że Lance zastosował kilka prostych ale znakomitych zabiegów:
1) Zrezygnował ze współczesnego formatu bluesrockowego, gdzie gitarzysta dominuje a reszta stanowi tylko tło i uzupełnienie jego popisów. Chociaż kompozycje i aranżacje (świetne!) są przeważnie jego (plus standardy) to eksponują wszystkich wykonawców, szczególnie klawisze. Hammond wreszcie brzmi jak hammond: nie tylko szumi ale również warczy i bulgocze, przelewa się w gośnikach z efektem ściany wodospadu niczym na najlepszych płytach Deep Purple. Jest go dużo i jest naprawdę potężny. Podobnie z fortepianem - też ma sporo przestrzeni solowej i toczy pojedynki z gitarą. To samo z wokalem - Johnny Neel śpiewa tak jakby to była jego płyta. Sekcja rytmiczna również nie odpuszcza.
2) Utwory reprezentują różne konwencje grania: od southernowego bluesrocka, przez tradycyjny blues po gitarowo-hammondowy soul jazz w stylu Jimmy Smitha. Wszystko to spaja fantastyczny feeling i koncertowa energia wykonawców, dzięki temu jest cały czas ciekawie i różnorodnie bez wrażenia zbytniego eklektyzmu.
3) Oczywiście Lance wspaniale zagrał na gitarze, przy czym część jego solówek następuje po wcześniejszym popisie klawiszowym lub wokalnym, kiedy gitary zaczynamy być spragnieni i kiedy każdy jej dźwięk maksymalnie uderza do głowy. Po prostu perfekcyjnie dopracował dramaturgię płyty.
4) Zadbał o realistyczną rejestrację dźwięku i miks. Czujemy się jakby grali koncert w naszym pokoju. Zdecydowanie wolę ten dźwięk od większości produktów Telarcu.
Nie mnie oceniać, czy Cyril Lance to lepszy gitarzysta od innych współczesnych bluesrockowych wirtuozów tego instrumentu. Wiem za to, że nagrał jedną z moich ulubionych płyt bluesowych wszechczasów. Nie chcę używać wielkich słów, ale gdybym miał w tej chwili wybierać album roku 2003, to dotychczasowi oczywiści faworyci - Allman Brothers Band z rewelacyjnym krążkiem Hittin' the Note spadliby u mnie na drugie miejsce.
Swój egzemplarz Strangera (wydanie Dixie Frog) kupiłem w Stepie za 24 zł. Był to jeden z lepszych interesów mojego życia.
Czy ktoś jeszcze zna tę płytę i też się nią zachwyca?
