Wiele lat temu, gdy po raz pierwszy usłyszałem Steely Dan, nie trafiło do mnie ich podejście do muzykowanie i poczucie humoru. I jakoś tak sobie zapamietałem, że to nie dla mnie, a że grupa nie jest w Polsce zbyt popularna, to nie wracałem do niej myślami.
Stosunkowo niedawno mnie olśniło, że to dokładnie to, co teraz mnie w muzyce pociąga: melodyjne piosenki, pokręcone aranżacje, jazzowe partie instrumentalne i rewelacyjne, jedyne w swoim rodzaju teksty. To chyba najbardziej nowojorska ze wszystkich nowojorskich formacji. Nie sposób sobie wyobrazić, że Becker i Fagen mogliby tworzyć w innym mieście. Błyskawicznie awansowali u mnie na grupę kultową i chłonę każdą nutę i każde słowo. I - jeśli mogę się wypowiedzieć będąc neofitą - nic nie stracili z wiekiem. Ich dwie ostatnie płyty studyjne ("Two against nature" i "Everything must go") są znakomite. Chodzę teraz po świecie z półgłupim uśmiechem i podśpiewuję sobie te utwory. Ludzie dziwnie na mnie patrzą, ale co tam.
