Bergonzi należy do grupy saksofonistów wywodzących swoją muzykę z tradycji jazzu Johna Coltrane'a, którzy zaistnieli na amerykańskiej scenie jazzowej w latach 80. Mimo że Bergonzi należał do najbardziej oryginalnych z nich, długo musiał czekać na znaczący przełom w swojej karierze.
Od ósmego roku życia grał na klarnecie i saksofonie altowym, w wieku 12 lat przerzucił się na tenor i pobierał lekcje u nauczycieli z pobliskiego Berklee School of Music. Po ukończeniu Lowell State University w 1972 r. wyjechał do Nowego Jorku i rozpoczął dziesięcioletnią współpracę z Dave'em Brubeckiem, najpierw w Two Generations Band, potem w kwartecie.
Po powrocie do Bostonu w 1987 r. nagrał serię płyt pod własnym nazwiskiem i dla własnego wydawnictwa, ale także dla włoskiej wytwórni Red Records. Oprócz prowadzenia swoich grup - kwartetu Con Brio i Trio Gonz - Bergonzi nie przestawał udzielać się jako sideman. Wraz z Michaelem Breckerem i Branfordem Marsalisem wystąpił na debiutanckiej płycie Joeya Calderazzo (pianisty znanego m.in. ze współpracy z Michaelem Breckerem) wydanej przez Blue Note w 1990 r. Pod wrażeniem jego pełnych wyrazu i głębi improwizacji wytwórnia zaproponowała mu zarejestrowanie jego własnego materiału.

Kompozytor, perkusista, aranżer. Karierę artystyczna rozpoczął w latach 70-tych; związany był wówczas z takimi zespołami jak Dżamble czy August Trio. W 1981 roku wyjechał do Nowego Jorku, gdzie zetknął się Jaco Pastoriusem, Mikem Clarkiem i Robbie Gonzalezem. W połowie lat 80-tych zamieszkał w Kanadzie, udzielajac się zarówno jako lider, jak i muzyk sesyjny w zespołach grających jazz, funk, r&b i muzykę etniczną. W Montrealu zrealizował też kilka projektów na chór i orkiestrę.
Nagrał 16 płyt jako sideman oraz 12 krążków autorskich, z takimi muzykami jak: John Abercrombie, Kenny Wheeler, Don Thompson, Mike Murley, Neil Swainson, Reggie Schwager, John MacLeod i Brian Dickinson. W 1995 roku Jacek Kochan przeniósł się do Warszawy gdzie komponuje, nagrywa i koncertuje z wieloma muzykami, wśród nich są m.in.: Dave Liebman, Gary Thomas, Joey Calderazzo, Eddie Henderson, Tomasz Stańko, Zbigniew Namysłowski, Assif Tsahar, Piotr Wojtasik, Adam Pierończyk i Leszek Możdżer.

Kontrabasista, gitarzysta basowy, kompozytor. Laureat wielu festiwali jazzowych (Jazz Juniors 95’ i 96’ w Krakowie, Jazz nad Odrą 96’ we Wrocławiu, Pomorska Jesień Jazzowa 96’). Jako lider nagrał trzy autorskie płyty ('FOLLOW THE SOUL ' , 'FREEP' i 'VILLAGE TIME'), entuzjastycznie przyjęte przez krytykę. Ma na swoim koncie współpracę z takimi artystami, jak Dave Kikoski, Brian Melvin, Avishai Cohen, Tyler Hornby, Jakob Dinesen, Ulf Adaker, Zbigniew Namysłowski, Jan Ptaszyn Wróblewski, Janusz Muniak, Maciej Sikała i wielu innych...
